View Full Version : EU-Chronicle band project

Hello Folks,
while replying to Una's Itumatrox globals lightning strucked me, afterwards I had a hinky idea.
What about a EU-Chronicle band project?
We are spread round the world here in our great forum and why not produce a song? It must not related to EU of course, but... .
The only thing we need are some musicians. It is obvious that Kets is able to handle a guitar, and for sure we have some other musicians here.
So we have to think about a song to play. Everyone is doing his track and I will do the mixdown.
What do you think about?

You can count on me not to mess this up by not contributing, I don't know one end of a guitar from another and I can't sing to save my life :)

Good idea, hope it pans out.

No I don't think I can do count on him or her not to mess this up by not contributing he or she do not know one end of a guitar from another. Why can't you do sing to save his or her life smileGood idea hope it pans out?

What kind of music genre are we talking about here?
Rock, metal, pop...

Technical:

I own an ESP Viper with EMG-81 pickups in bridge and neck. I play through a Line 6 Spider II into an M-Audio Firewire 410 Sound Card that is connected to 2 x Rokit 6 Studio speakers and all that is routed to record from M-Audio Pro-Tools.

I also have a Shure KSM-27 Studio microphone and 2 x Shure 58 microphones.

Now that the techno mumble jumble is out of the way lets get down to the talent portion of this little reply hehe

My singing is according to people far better than my guitar playing but I am not so sure that is accurate hehe. I am not an uber guitar player but I can hold my own. Iīll just have to record covers today to show off what ever talents I have if any... I promise nothing at all! If itīs horrible so be it but at least I tried haha

+rep for a great idea!

Will post links to the songs later today, that is of course if I manage to record them! I warn you! One will be a Slipknot cover and the other one is yet to be decided but will be on the lighter side hehe

Heha, cool idea. I have built electric drumkit and it is using demo software to play samples. It works and we've been using the same kit with our band. I can also play guitar but don't have any good recording gear for it.

Here is a youtube-video of semi-finished kit:

You donīt need good gear to record it, you only need soul ;)

Sidenote: You really do need good gear but that sentence is so cool haha

I just watched the Youtube video from Mora and here are my thoughts!

What is up with the almost vertical toms? I have never seen toms that way before, only big ass gongs and huge bass drums from experts(hand bass drums)
The sound was pretty good though! The video was out of sync though but that is not the point of the video, itīs a sound demo rather than a performance demo hehe

Record something again. Do you know back in black? Play that one through and record it, Easiest song I have ever learned on drums hehe. Just a suggestion... Play what ever song comes to mind, but at least play one from beginning to end so showcase what you got ;)

lol, this makes me remember my days as live sound engineer. My first question during soundchek (if I heard strange sounds from a guitar) was to check the battery... nearly 100% hitrate. those guitarheroes mainly do not think about such stupid things like batteries.:D:D:D

Bloodstar
14-05-2008, 04:28 PM
It was the battery that was causing the crappy tone! one would think that if a battery for an active pickup that is supposed to make the sound dirty would get even more dirty when the battery is low or done!

I decided to record: With Arms Wide Open by Creed. Itīs definitely not an uber recording but it is song that I know how to play the solo because itīs very simple. Who would have known that recording would be so stressful haha. My fingers did not find the fretboard at times it was just messed up! I love the feeling! I definitely see where I have to improve my playing after that little recording session. I have still yet to record the vocals. This is what I am going to do. I am going to upload both with and without vocals so that people might sing over it and/or record bass, drums or what ever on it!

Oh and if someone would be able to tell me how the hell I put on the click track and to adjust it I would be forever greatful haha(Pro Tools 7.3 M-Audio Edition)

That clamp which attachs the drum to rack isn't good, it doesn't hold the tom at desired position. Rack is now shortened about 20cm so toms can be held more flat.

Almost any video I upload to youtube goes out of sync automatically. I will make more videos as soon as I get that trigger-to-midi converter back. I'm not a drummer either so performance won't be better in other videos :>

I am converting the vocal passage to Windows Media File. I did not buy the mp3 option with pro-tools so I canīt do that just yet but of course one can convert the WMF to anything hehe
It dead hard to do vocals! No one told me being a sound engineer would be so damn hard! The tones are all over the place, reverb is shit and I donīt know what the beep I am doing but itīs fun to experiment haha

I hear more Dio and Bon Jovi than Scott Stapp in that recording... Definitely need to remember to down tune my guitar by half a step because standard tuning does not compliment my voice at all...

Will be ready in about 10 minutes :)

What is the proposed medium for recording the tracks? I've got Sonar 3 Producer from cakewalk, but I've had some issues with it recently and lots of dropouts. I can also play bass if needed, I have a Yamaha RSX 880 as for guitars, I've got the SG Custom in the picture, a Gibson Les Paul Special, a Gibson Blues Hawk electric and a Washburn acoutic / electric. If the tracks are distributed as wav files then I can import it into Sonar...with luck...and drop my part(s) onto it.

BTW, I was trained in classical voice, opera and the like back in college and sang Rock and Roll from the early seventies until today. My primary instrument is voice, so if need be, I may be able to assist in that aspect.

I would think almost anything is acceptable as long as we can all import them into the programs we use. Of course one can import all types but not for full editing...

I am using Pro Tools v7.3 M-Audio Edition...

Just record something and post it for us to hear Kets... Woot! ;)

Hello folks,
by reading all your feedback I'm really astonished about the feedback.
But now I think it is time to bring order to this (very creative) chaos.
Up to now we have Mora, Bloodstar and Kets
what you think about Bloodstar for guitar, Mora for drums and Kets for bass (and perhaps vocals) ?
Of course more are welcome.
what we should do in advance:
- think about the format to record, it seems that a windows format would be best (wmf) cause most programs are able to handle it.
- think about the genre to play and to cover or not (for me rock would be ok, cover as well for the first try)
- think about the order to record the instruments

if it is helpfull I can open my server at home for storing data and give to the band ftp access to it
I also can do the part of the mixdown, I know lot's about effects and how to use them , lol

Also we should keep in mind that we need for good mixdown clear tracks, without effects and EQing. But you are all musicians so you surely know about ;)

This piece of demo-software might not be able to send different samples to separate tracks, at least I haven't figured out how to do so. So I could supply one stereo track at a time. Samples are pre-processed and there is only one sample per drum, even though it would be possible to have different samples for different hit velocities. There are lots of knobs to turn but with pre-processed samples those aren't needed much (in my opinion). I need to get better software some day, with lots of samples.

Kets:
has an amazing collection of guitars! His setups can and will most likely be alot better sounding than my made for metal guitar sound! On the subject of guitars we can use the very regular rythm and lead setup. I have a feeling Kets is a good lead player but we will find out wonīt we hehe
Mora:
Does have drums but we still have to hear if there is talent in his drumming! Of course non-talent is not excluded but does help with projects to have at least alittle soul hehe His sound was good, now just need to hear a song through...

On the subject of singing:
With the background Kets has I would suggest using him BUT I have yet to hear him sing... Will be nice to get a link in the near future my fellow bandmate hehe

EQing:
The only thing I recorded with any kind of effect was the voice, there I used reverb but on my guitar I played through my Line 6 spider II... Of course all singing will be minus effects. A file with effects and one without will always be sent from me singing wise. So that you guys can hear the what I am hearing effect wise and then what it sounds like without my effects...

The format/type of files:
"What does your program handle?" Of course the highest quality available is the option to take. 128 is better than 8 and so forth if you know what I mean hehe Windows Media Files do work for me but just remember to have the quality at max when you save it otherwise itīs gonna sound like crap.

On the subject of recording:
Of course it will sound better if you have a professional soundcard, the recording will be more managable that way and the tone and style will shine through well! But of course not all can afford to buy any kind of professional soundcard(mine costed 500 dollars+300 for Pro Tools) normal soundcard recording can be done for sure but the result of the recording may well be un-usable in a final mixing. Of course demos and such can be made but if one would think further then itīs time to upgrade from that Soundblaster gaming soundcard hehe

Genre:
Rock, metal, pop, emo, punk... What ever comes to mind is fine with me. I prefer rock/metal but I am also into many different genres. List of influences: Alter Bridge, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Slipknot, Stone Sour, Korn, Steve Vai, Miljenko(Steel Dragon), Zack Wylde, Rainbow, kiss, Mötley Crue, Ozzy... The list is basically endless hehe

To Cover or not to Cover:
We can try out on a cover first. To see how we sound together on an already made song. You can count me out of any type of fast lead guitar(Metallica lead guitar I can not do) but slower, more bluesy tones I can do... Will just have to record some riffs and leads for you guys to hear!
What songs come to mind to cover? We can make it very easy with Creep by Radiohead at first... Just name your songs and we shall all see what comes out at the top :)

Recording Order:

Rythm guitar
Bass guitar
Lead guitar
Piano/synth
Drums
Vocals
Backup vocals
MixingOf course the recording order will never hold up in such a way but that is how one would think is good. Sometimes ideas come from different members and therefor we base songs from different instruments and members. So itīs just a showcase of what a list could look like.

Done for now 8)

agreed, of course with some remarks:
at the moment this is for fun, we will see what the future brings. So do not care too much about your sound cards. of course it should be recorded at best rates. But I do not want to exlude one only because he did not owe a super duper high performance sound card.
about the music and the selection I leave it to the musicans, I'm more the technic geek in this game. I'm already in contact with a friend who has the real uber equipment for mixdown and effects and so on.
I feel there is lot of fun ahead, but do not put too much pressure on it, it should be funny in a few days as well :).

58 microphones!!!..well i got some hairspray the other day...how about that! :Nurse:
Shure 58 is one microphone, he has two of them.

I got rid of my old soundcard few months ago, because of poor midi support. Current one can handle midi signals better and playing can be done almost without latency (1-3ms). M-Audio Delta -series.

We have recorded some songs with drums & bass only with our bandmates, drums first and bass then. It's fun to play guitars & sing over a pre-recorded track if everybody can't make it to the training session. It is somewhat logical order in my opinion. I haven't done any studio recordings so I have no idea how songs are recorded there. I'd go for .wav-files, no compression, no loss of data. But then we need ftp-server where we can upload them.

Rock is fine with me, can't do any progressive-style drumming because of poor in-head metronome. (4/4)

Well then we just have to find a song to cover!

Cryinī by Aerosmith
Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
Nothing Else Matters by Metallica
Frantic by Metallica
Whatīs This Life For by Creed
Vermilion PT.2 by Slipknot
Song 2 by Blur
Sweet Child oīmine by Guns NīRoses
American woman by Lenny Kravitz(his version)
Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor
Mama Iīm Coming Home - Ozzy Osbourne

I have tablature books with those songs so they are all accurate from my side, I can send copies in e-mails and such. I donīt know how to play all those songs but I learn quickly ;)

Simple rock song is basically E-G-D-A Power cords for verses, the intro will be something easy with alittle lead lick, The chorus will just be a re-arrangement of the simple cords above, then a solo section which I will mess up and then the chorus and outro. Intro, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, chorus and outro...
That sounds like a huge song lol... Lets hope it sounds as well as it looks written haha

I apologize in advance to those that hate the upload site that I am using. The file is bigger than what I am allowed to attach to posts(at the moment)
The file is 3.9mb...
Was first 235kb and I was like WTF??? Then I listened to it and the whole thing was on such low settings it was just like when you tape concerts with a phone haha

You guys can of course tell me about better uploading sites ;)

http://www.freeuploadz.com/en/file/22/With-Arms-Wide-Open---Guitar-and-Vocals-wma.html

Here is the one with guitar and vocals... This is stressing the hell out of me haha

Be kind lol

wma uploads enabled - sorry Bloodstar, no-one has wanted to upload one before so there were no settings :)
Also wmv uploads allowed to be a bit bigger now

(Hopefully I'll get the time to listen properly to some of these recordings!)

I used to play the 'cello - but as it was about the same size as a bike, I guess that playing would be like riding one (i.e. something you never forget)

I was tempted to buy one after seeing Apocalyptica support Rammstein a few years ago... if they had given me Metallica to play I may never have given it up!

I tried playing Sweet child of mine yesterday and do I have to say it sucked bad? Not only canīt I get the Gibson sound but my active pickups just mess things up even further. And the whole solo/lead section is way out of my league at this time(give me 1 year lol)

So Smells Like Teen Spirit is something that Iīd record but itīs still undecided what we will do. So guys, what do you want to do? What songs come to mind?

Woot!

I just recorded Smells Like Teen Spirit. I have to say itīs my worst ever recording EVER!
I just canīt sing badly and that is what this song asks for, I had the guitar in standard tuning which never works for me fully vocally. But I made do since this is all for fun and giggles hehe

I recorded the whole song through with the guitar following the song, then I recorded the bassline with my guitar following the song, then I recorded the solo(smiles) and then I put my oh so messed up vocals on it haha

I apologize for any hearing damage anyone might suffer from my vocal performance on that song!

As always itīs in the windows media file format but I also saved it as WAV if anyone prefers. I will record something else today as well. I am in the mood to record stuff hehe

But this time itīs gonna be some metal stuff 8)

Will post as soon as I have uploaded... about 40+ minutes from now it should be done :D

Oh and a sidenote: The two solos I have done now are my first venturing into any type of guitar solo venue so I feel pretty shaky because all my guitar heroes are so much better... But I just donīt have the dedication needed to sit down with my guitar for 3+ hours per day and get better... So live with it hehe

*edit while writing the above*
The upload failed so that is not an option :(

That link does work for me...
On the right side of the page that comes up is a box where you have to type in a verification number that is provided to make sure you are not a bot. Then you click the button below it, you are then taken to a page that has download options but you just wait from 5 to 60 seconds for one to open up and there will be a huge button that says Download Your File Here

I know itīs a hassle but I donīt have any other way of uploading for free :(

I have tried other sites but most of them show porn and such so that is a big no, no

Hope it works now! If it does not let me know again and Iīll try the EuC upload again...

Link is working, you have to open it with internet explorer though. Site tries to install some activex-component, it isn't necessary so discard it if being asked about. With firefox the "click here to download"-button doesn't appear after 15 seconds have passed. With IE it works fine.

Bloodstar, do you play with click? If you can't enable click track with your current program, try using audacity. It's a freeware/open source program and works great. It can export to wav/mp3 too.

I'll have to visit my hometown and pick up that trigger-to-midi-unit so I can record some drumming.

When that song was playing I could see a part from a movie where there is a flashback to the good times and the bad times but there was a very nice vibe to it all! That is the kind of song that stays alive through the decades! Nice work Kets! More of such creative structuring!!!

Thanks, Bunny.

It was a song I wrote after seeing a documentary on a group of homeless men in NYC. They were speaking, at one point, about drug abuse and alcoholism amoung them and I remember the reporter asking one of the men, "What's in that bottle you've got?" and the guy answered, "Hope." Thus, this song was born.

I'm not sure what 'southern state' you are from Bunny, but here's one I wrote called "Summertime In the Carolinas"

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and met in the lobby where they were discussing their recent victories in chess tournaments. The hotel manager came out of the office after an hour, and asked them to disperse. He couldn't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer. "I have not heard of 'southern state' you are from Bunny but here's one he or she wrote called Summertime In the Carolinas"? Got some drumming done today, no metronomes were harmed (or used):

http://koti.mbnet.fi/huski/paskoo/nirvana.mp3

Hehee, I'm not a drummer, you can hear it too.

Wasn't able to upload mp3 file from attachments-menu. Software has changed too, now I'm using Addictive Drums demo, which has no time limitations and has far more better default samples than battery does. Too bad there are only bassdrum, snare, hihat, crash and ride available, each of them has 4 different velocities recorded though. Almost everything can be adjusted. Still I'm not able to route each drum to different recording channels so I have one stereo track available.

I drummed "Sweet Child of Mine" but somehow recorded it at 96kHz sample rate. Now I can't downgrade it to 44kHz for mp3-conversion, lame-codec doesn't like higher sample rates. I'll try to drum it again today. "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback is easy one, I could play it too.

I might be able to play guitars for "Sweet Child of Mine" if Bloodstar doesn't want to.

Hey...

If EuC isn't allowing you to use it for the upload site, then I need to sort it out so it is.
Please pass any reports of problems to me and I'll get them sorted out.
I'll also make a dedicated forum for the band project as soon as you all feel it's taking off.

Also, I've started making some tracks with scattamah, using Apple's garageband mainly. They are coming out as trip-hop sounding things at the moment. He's made a couple of grindcore tracks, and it seems we're generally stretching our abilities and trying things out.
As soon as they're presentable I'll get 'em uploaded :)
